Volunteering and jobs
One of these is a real feature. The other is a checkbox
The jobs and referrals board is a proper member-facing feature with a moderation queue. Volunteering is not: it is an interest checkbox plus roles an administrator assigns. Selling it as anything more would be a lie you would discover in week two.
- Job types
- Full-time, part-time, internship, referral
- Every posting
- Pending until an admin approves it
- Posting lifetime
- 60 days, fixed, no renewal
- Volunteer sign-up
- Does not exist; admins assign roles
The jobs board
Members post, an administrator approves, sixty days later it goes#
Any active member can post a role: title, organisation, location, type, and a description of up to 5,000 characters. An apply link is optional and has to be a secure address. Referral is one of the four types, which is the one alumni boards actually get used for.
Every posting is pending until somebody with the right permission approves it, so nothing appears in front of your members without a human reading it first. From the moderation screen a posting can be approved, rejected or closed.
Where there is no external apply link, the board shows a Request contact button, which files a job-context contact request to the person who posted it. The context is checked: you cannot claim a job reason for contacting somebody who has not posted a job.
Three fixed edges on the board. A posting expires after sixty days and that number is in the code, not in Settings. There is no renewal and no warning before it happens. And a member cannot edit, close or delete their own posting, so every change is a message to the committee.
Volunteering
What actually exists, in one paragraph#
A member ticks "I can volunteer" on their profile. An administrator creates named volunteer roles and assigns members to them, with a scope and an active flag. The member sees a small strip on their dashboard naming the roles they hold. That is the entire feature.
There is no browsing, no sign-up, no application, no shift, no rota and no lifecycle beyond active or not. The honest description is volunteer-interest capture plus admin-managed role assignments, and if a vendor sells you that as a volunteering module you should ask them to show you the sign-up screen.
Why it is still worth having. The list of members who said they would help, filtered by batch and city, is exactly the list a committee needs in the week before an event. It is also directly usable as an email campaign audience, which is the closest thing to a call for volunteers the product has.
Questions about jobs and volunteering#
Can members browse volunteer roles and sign up?
No. There is no member-facing volunteering screen at all: no list of roles, no sign-up, no application. A member ticks one box on their profile saying they can help, and an administrator creates roles and assigns people to them. The only thing a member sees back is a small strip on their dashboard naming the roles they hold.
So what is the volunteers module toggle for?
Honestly, nothing today. It declares no routes and hides no admin section, so switching it off changes nothing you can see. We would rather write that down than let you find it.
Who can post a job?
Any active member: a role, an organisation, a location, a type (full-time, part-time, internship or referral), a description of up to 5,000 characters and an optional secure apply link. Ten postings an hour per member.
How long does a posting stay up?
Sixty days, then it expires. That period is fixed in the code: there is no setting, no renew button and no warning email before it goes. Tell the poster to repost if the role is still open.
Can a member edit or withdraw their own posting?
No. They see their posting with a status chip and nothing else. Changing or closing one is a job for an administrator, who can approve, reject or close it from the moderation screen.
